Digital Portfolio and Final Presentation
For the 'Extended Project Question' done in year 12 at my school; I created a trading card game.
This section of my website contains:
my digital and (photos of) my physical portfolio; detailing the process behind the formation of my game. As well as my final presentation I gave for my question.
Recorded below are the three unique structure decks I designed, two of which I full printed to be played with as my final product.
Physical Portfolio
Why a Card Game?
This was the first question I asked myself before beginning my research. In review if I were to distill it down; it's because of how much emphasis on the player there is in its design.
The reasoning behind employing a physical portfolio for the record of my process was because card games are a physical game.
As such the most effective way to fully translate my process and reasoning to an examiner with no prior knowledge of trading card games was to use a complementary medium.
The Yellow Sign - Full Deck
This deck's inspiration 'The King In Yellow' is a collection of short stories, woven together by the appearance of the play sharing its title. The play itself is a corrupting piece of art which poisons the life of it's readers. The themes of madness and mind control are featured throughout this deck, with many cards being direct references to characters of the stories.
The Call of Cthulhu - Full Deck
This deck's play-style is reflective of the story it's based upon, many of the cards being direct references. The leader; an idol of Cthulhu being the catalyst leading the narrator to uncover the cult of Cthulhu and the story of a Norewiagn sailor who's crew died awakening the Old God from it's slumber.
The Necronomicon
This is a perfect example of the flavour of my game and how it effects card design. The multitude of random effects dictated by a die roll is based upon the numerous incantations, rituals and well of forbidden knowledge found within the book.
The life cost to retrieve The Necronomicon from your Crypt, not only supports its deck's play-style but reflects how pursuit of its accursed information will ultimately spell your demise.
The lack of specificity of 'Roll a die' is intentional to allow the use of different sided dice as a way to change the effects of the Entries added by the effect. As the Entries designed for a d20 will be different to the ones designed for a d6, it will be up to the player which dice they use per match but not the Entries linked to that dice.
